Dr. Shib Sankar Ganguli received his Master’s degree in Applied Geophysics (2011) from Indian School of Mines (now IIT (ISM)), Dhanbad and PhD in Geophysics (2016) from Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) implemented at CSIR (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research)-National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad, India. At present, he is working as a Scientist at the Institute. Prior to joining this position, he served as Inspire Faculty at the Department of Earth Sciences in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur during Jan, 2017 to Nov, 2018 after receiving the highly competitive and prestigious award “DST Inspire Faculty” by Dept. of Science & Tech. (DST), Govt. of India. He was previously a Visiting Researcher at SINTEF Petroleum Research, Norway. Besides, he has successfully completed the Graduate Program by SEG/ExxonMobil Student Education Program (SEP)-2015, held in Prague, Czech Republic.
Dr. Shib is the first in India to finish a Ph.D. thesis on CO2-EOR and its sequestration in the Indian mature oil field and based on his notable contribution, he has been conferred on Springer Outstanding Thesis Prize for the year 2017 by Springer International Publishers. Moreover, he is a recipient of the prestigious, Young Scientist Award in the category of “National Geoscience Awards 2017” by the Ministry of Mines, Govt. of India (GoI) and Young Scientist Award 2019 by Telangana Academy of Sciences. His research contributions for the understanding of earth system sciences mainly focused on the integration of various geophysical and other relevant data for numerical, observational and interpretational work. He has significantly contributed to the research of CO2-enhanced oil recovery (EOR) and its geological sequestration in Indian mature oil field (Springer Intl. Pub., 2017; Jour. of App. Geoph., 2016), analysis of the source characteristics of 53 earthquakes in and around the Indian subcontinent (BSSA, 2016), development of the modified Wiener filter with the aim to process the stationary as well as non-stationary geophysical data (Geophys. Prospect., 2016), development of an interpretation technique based on SVD and multi-fractal methods to investigate the gravity data in terms of eigen image characteristics (Jour. of App. Geop., 2013). His research interests are not limited to, but includes development and application of modern methods to geophysical data, reservoir characterization, seismic, geophysical modeling, simulation and inversion, rock physics. He has more than 16 (9 as a Lead author) research publications in peer-reviewed International and National journals apart from several conference proceedings.
He has accomplished many challenging pieces of training from reputed oil and gas industries and research institutes including Schlumberger, ExxonMobil, Ikon Science (UK), ONGC, SEG and SINTEF Petroleum Research (Norway). Moreover, he is a reviewer of many leading journals such as Geophy., Jour. of Nat. Gas Sc. & Engg., Geophy. Props., J. App. Geo., Intl. Jour. of Multiphase Flow, IET, etc. and active member of many reputed professional geophysical & earth science societies including SEG, EAGE, AAPG and a life member of Indian Geophysical Union and Society of Petroleum Geophysicists (SPG). He is also a Member of the Editorial Advisory Board, Cambridge Scholars Publishing, U.K. Recently, he has been elected as a "Vice President (Professional Development & Career Counselling) to join the Executive Committee of Young Earth Scientists (YES) for the year 2020-2022.
