Project Title: Development of a tool for water level measurements in field wells employing non contact measurement techniques
Project Number: MLP-5701-28 Activity 1.1
Project Leader: M.P.Sarma
Duration: April 2007 to March 2010

Objectives:

  • The project aims in implementing new ideas in Geophysical measurement techniques / circuit designs / that incorporate the state of art technology to provide a portable tool employing non-contact measuring technique.
  • Use of ultrasonic level transmitters / Receivers is being explored to detect the target, water level in this case, which reflects the acoustic pulse back to the sensor. The system then measures accurately the time taken by the pulse to return to the sensor by a Lab-view based application in a portable computer and computes the distance to the target after careful echo signal processing.
  • If accurate measurement of groundwater levels in the bore wells is possible from the surface itself with out having the need to connect cables etc this can become a useful tool to many geo-hydrologists. Measurements of draw down in the pumping well can be simplified to a mere press of a button when desired. This also forms a handy tool, simple and faster and also a utility tool for water level measurements in polluted wells.
