WELCOME TO GRAVITY- MAGNETIC STUDY GROUP

NGRI gravity group has been active right from the inception of the institute and carried out extensive gravity measurements primarily for geodynamic studies. Utilizing the data from other geo-scientific organizations, the first Gravity Map Series of India was published by the gravity group in the year 1975. During the recent years, the group has carried out extensive gravity surveys for Hydrocarbon exploration in the frontier basins of Upper Assam and Arunanchal Pradesh and Deccan Volcanic Province of Gujarat, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. The gravity group has coordinated the revision of the earlier Gravity Map Series of India and brought out the new Gravity Map Series-2006 in collaboration with major geoscientific organization of the country, such as GSI, ONGC, Survey of India, Oil India Limited. The Gravity group has acquired “FG-5 Absolute Gravimeter” for the first time in India in 2003 with partial financial support from Department of Ocean Development, Govt. of India and set up the first Absolute Gravity Observatory at Hyderabad and successfully established the precise absolute gravity bases at a number of places including Portblair in Andaman and Maitri station in Antarctica.

The gravity group is currently engaged in the following activities.

·     Development of new interpretation techniques and software for modeling of potential field data.

·      Studies related to geodynamics of the Indian subcontinent  with emphasis of deep crust and upper mantle structures

·     Vertical crustal deformation studies through repeat gravity and DGPS measurements in seismically active regions.

·     Exploration of natural resources with emphasis on hydrocarbon exploration in the frontier basins of India.

At present, Gravity-Magnetic Group headed by Dr Bijendra Singh, scientist-G along with a team of 10 dedicated Scientists is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and interpretation tools. The group has developed innovative techniques in the modeling and interpretation of Gravity Magnetic data. It has successfully completed many projects of national importance in the field of resource exploration and Geodynamic studies. These projects were sponsored by government and privative organizations such as DST, ONGC, OIDB, OIL and DGH GAIL, Cairn Energy, Prize Petroleum Ltd etc.

The Group has successfully completed an international collaborative project with scientists of GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany on “lithospheric study of Indian continent and adjoining oceans” using satellite gravity data and is currently engaged in another collaborative program with the Institute of Geophysics, CAU, Kiel. The group is currently involved in basic and applied research in the frontier area of geophysics such as vertical crustal deformation studies and satellite gravimetry for hydrology. The group has published research papers in all the leading scientific journals of high impact factor and produced 12 Ph. Ds. during the last decade.
