1. Title of Project:

High-Resolution Geophysical Investigations to Delineate Cavities and Vesicular Basaltic Zones in Deccan Traps of India for Minerals and Groundwater Resources

2. Project Number :

NWP-0046

3. Project Leader :

Dr. Shakeel Ahmed

4. Co-Project Leader :

Dr. Dewashish Kumar

5. Duration:

April 2007 to March 2012

6. Objectives:

The project envisages an integrated multi-disciplinary study for hidden mineral wealth and

groundwater resources of both economic and strategic value.

Identification of zeolite cavities and vesicular basaltic zones with the help of HERT (High-Resolution

Electrical Resistivity Tomography) using multi electrode resistivity imaging,

magnetic and electromagnetic techniques is the present study.

8. Results achieved so far:

v     Delineated Groundwater saturated vesicular/weathered basaltic zones which possess resistivity  ranges from about 15-90 ohm-m but Zeolite cavities have higher resistivity in the rang of 150-200 Ohm-m while massive basalt > 500 Ohm-m

v     Zeolites cavities are the contributing sources for groundwater

v     Drilling at few sites had confirmed the presence of Zeolites and latter resistivity logging clearly delineated the weathered & fresh zeolite bearing zones based on resistivity values

v     The characteristics resistivity obtained for fresh basalt in association with zeolite have a resistivity ranges between 90-105 Ohm-m while the weathered zeolitic basaltic layer have resistivity values lies between 40-50 Ohm-m as compared to 500-600 Ohm-m which corresponds to fresh basalt without the presence of zeolite
