Objectives:

Due to over-exploitation of groundwater in hard rock areas for developmental activities the resource has dwindled leading to scarcity and quality deterioration. The outline of the proposed activity is mainly for understanding the efficacy of current practices of water harvesting through irrigation tank system in semi-arid region and develop new strategies to minimize the effect of natural limitations and increase potential benefit of sustainable development of water resources for achieving a water security.
Rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge thought to be a solution for controlling the rate of depletion of groundwater and in creation of a sustainable groundwater regime over a long term period. However, the mass practice of water harvesting and artificial recharge is being adopted indiscriminately without any scientific basis and evaluation. It is necessary therefore to develop a guideline methodology for assessment and evaluation for benefit accrual. Two pilot projects representing major hard rock types namely the granite and basalt addressing the objectives in creation of safe drinking water and sustainable source for agriculture respectively. Assessment and Evaluation of methodology adopted in fulfilling the objectives over respective areas requires monitoring over three to five years for development of a guideline.
