                        Area: Earthquake Hazard Assessment

 Project Title:

Application of synthetic aperture radar interferometry (InSAR) to
measure ground deformation for seismic hazard studies in and around India

Project Number

MLP-6404-28(SPS)

Project Leader

Dr (Mrs)  S.P. Satyabala

Duration

April 2008 to March 2012

Objectives:

To use InSAR to study earthquakes, motion on active faults and oil/coal fields.

At NGRI this technique has been used to study the *1993 Killari* and *1999 Chamoli* earthquakes (see JGR2006 111, B02302 and GRL2006 33, L23305). Recently, *a slow earthquake* followed by wide-spread creep has been detected on the *Chaman Fault* in Afghanistan implying a lower Seismic Hazard on this part of the Chaman Fault (see GRL2008, 35, L06309).
