  Objectives:

The project is aimed at investigating the dynamics of subduction at the Andaman arc and the Eastern Himalayan regions through characterizing the seismic structure, deformation and tectonics of the Indian plate. This involves deployment of broadband networks, application and development of advanced methodologies to parameterize lateral heterogeneities and anisotropy, cross correlation of ambient noise to obtain high resolution 3D images of the subsurface and   modeling of teleseismic and local earthquake data to obtain models of the crust and upper mantle structure. In addition, locales of fluid filled pockets and zones of serpentinization that are central to understanding the seismogenic potential of a subduction zone will be identified.
                                                                                                  
Activity: The activity is aimed at understanding the seismogenesis in the Koyna-Warna region, well known for its reservoir trigger seismicity (RTS), through modeling of the crustal structure and the source mechanism. Techniques like Receiver function, seismic tomography and ambient noise correlation shall be used to map the detailed velocity structure of the region to infer the most plausible seismogenic zones. Further, moment tensor inversion studies will be undertaken for estimation of focal mechanisms which will be used for stress inversion studies for understanding the local tectonics of the Koyna-Warna region in conjunction with the RTS mechanism, in a larger frame work of the Indian plate tectonics.
