ACTIVITY: Basic and Applied Research in the field of Geophysics.

The National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) was established under CSIR in 1961 at Hyderabad with the mission to be the premier geoscientific organisation in India.  Over the last three and half years , it has established an enviable reputation with its excellent research programs and developments in earth sciences that have provided the benefit of its scientific and technological prowess for the well being of the people of the country.

PROFILE OF NGRI

Starting from a modest staff complement  and budget, the Institute has grown into an Internationally recognized research organisation located in a panoramic and expensive campus.  The institute has a scientific staff of about 200 and an equally large highly skilled technical support staff for its field intensive activities. Its research activities are regularly published in highly reputed national and international earth science journals.  A healthy balance has been maintained between scientific projects of basic and applied thrust and of societal and economic significance.  The major research and development programs of  the institute relate to the following fields:

1. Exploration of hydrocarbon and coal.

2.Mineral exploration and engineering geophysics.

3.Exploration, assessment and management of groundwater resources.

4.Earthquake hazard assessment.

5.Structure of earth's interior and history of its evolution in space and time.

6.Development of geophysical instruments.

7.Special activities related to earth sciences.
